About the Role:

We’re seeking a skilled and motivated Senior or Principal DER Optimisation Engineer to join our team. Located across our CBD and Glen Waverley office, you will work for one of Australia’s leading distribution organisations, be part of a highly capable team, and be at the forefront of the industry’s transition.

Playing an integral role in this transition from traditional Distribution Network Service Provider (DNSP) to a new Distribution System Operator (DSO), your role will be to lead the development of new DSO solutions that address this challenge and operationalise them in our businesses. 

United Energy is currently investing in innovative DSO systems to develop and embed these capabilities, and this role will help drive this, as well as monitoring and optimising DER, network control schemes and other technologies as we evolve our role as a DSO in ensuring network and system security are managed within operational limits
This will involve operationalising short-term forecasts, data analysis, modelling, problem solving, delivering economic low-voltage network interventions, providing support and direction to Network Control & Operation teams and working closely with internal and external stakeholders to resolve DSO system and customer DER issues.

Key duties and responsibilities: 

  • Test and onboard new customer technologies and DER connections for operation with DSO systems.
  • Establish the operational capability for scenario-based planning, curtailment estimation, short-term demand forecasting (1d-7d), day-to-day monitoring of DER, Dynamic Operating Envelopes (DOE’s), Flexibility services, network control schemes and others as our DSO role expands.  
  • Identify short-term network and system deficiencies. 
  • Optimise DER’s, DOE’s, flexibility services, network control schemes and initiate localised economic network intervention program of works to address short-term deficiencies. 
  • Identify opportunities for improvements related to DER performance or DSO systems and resolve them by working with internal teams.
  • Provide technical support and direction to Network Control & Operation teams including the delivery of system security preparedness activities. 
  • Provide technical expertise and mentoring to junior engineers, operational personnel, and other employees across the business. 
  • Representing the business on related technical matters relating to DSO systems and operations.
  • Plan for your development to achieve and maintain membership to National Engineers Register. 

 

To succeed in this role, you’ll have:

  • Degree Qualification in Electrical, Communication or Software Engineering
  • Proven ability to take an issue from detection through to resolution by applying engineering principles and technical standards to create better outcomes
  • Experience in the electricity distribution network, dealing with HV and LV matters.
  • Experience in Distribution Network Planning 
  • Excellent knowledge of DER technical standards (AS4777, Generation Connection Guidelines etc)
  • Sound knowledge of CSIP-AUS communication protocol
  • Strong understanding of distribution connection processes for generation and load
  • Strong data analytical skills through data manipulation and processing from databases and spreadsheets
