About the role
As a Senior Design Engineer (Secondary), you’ll play a key leadership role within our Network Services team, providing expert engineering guidance across the scoping, design, and estimation of substation projects for both internal and external clients.
You’ll lead the technical development of the Secondary Design team, driving excellence through the implementation of best-practice policies and procedures across distribution, sub-transmission, and transmission assets. Your contribution will be critical to the timely and successful delivery of projects, helping us meet key milestones and achieve strong financial outcomes for the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide effective specialist engineering design and advice in relation to the design of zone substations, industrial substations and distributed generation network connections to a variety of standards, and in accordance with the relevant technical manuals, OH&S Act, ‘Safety in Design’ guidelines and customer requirements
- Review and continuously improve processes and systems to ensure high productivity, efficiency and quality outcomes, after considering all the relevant safety, technical, commercial, and environmental factors
- Monitors, review and approve engineering solutions and proposals by others, as well as manufacturer supplied drawings, in accordance with agreed standards.
- Assist, develop and implement new technologies and innovative design practices and standards to meet business needs by applying technical expertise and experience.
- Through understanding the market, customers and competitors, develop ideas and initiatives to enhance the capabilities of the design team and the company’s competitive position. \
- Defines complex issues with ambiguous information, provide technical expertise and mentoring to design personnel and stimulates critical thinking to solve complex problems.
- Synthesizes various considerations to makes tough decisions, striking a balance with trade-offs and pushing for better solutions to move forward
- Ability to develop technical based policies and procedures relating to design, and implement change as required
- Assess Network Services capabilities and identify opportunities, as well as actively engaging with the Design Leadership team to develop a collaborative and agile mindset and support peers.
Key Criteria
- Design within AutoCAD and deliver solutions to complex problems or large projects applying engineering principles to create better outcomes that meet Network Services, its clients, and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Detailed knowledge of new protection and control technologies such as the implementation of IEC61850 & SCADA and techniques based on on-the-job experience.
- Demonstrated experience in the use of complex numbers and symmetrical components for fault current analysis by hand (i.e. Excel) and computer software packages (e.g. DigSilent PowerFactory/PSSE/Sincal).
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements, OH&S Act, ‘Safety in Design’ guidelines, standards and codes.
- Extensive design and protection settings experience in the electrical utility industry.
- Expert design and compliance knowledge of protection and control systems in the electrical distribution and transmission networks in accordance with customer and Australian Standards.
- Extensive experience in specifying and configuring protection relays from a range of major suppliers.
- Ideally, you’ll bring around 10 years of experience in the power industry, including at least 2 years in a technical leadership capacity.
To be successful in this role, you will ideally possess:
- A Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) or equivalent qualification
- Registration as a Professional Engineer with the Business Licensing Authority (BLA)
- Recognition as a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or holding National Engineering Registration (NER)
- Accreditation as a Registered Professional Engineer of Victoria (RPEV)
- RPEQ (Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland) is highly regarded but not essential
