About the role
We’re expanding our Network Services team and have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Protection & Control Engineer (Secondary Design) who’s ready to step up and take on more technical leadership.
In this role, you’ll provide specialist engineering support across the scoping, design, and delivery of major substation projects. You’ll work closely with internal teams and external clients to ensure high‑quality protection and control solutions that meet project, safety, and regulatory requirements.
This is a chance to grow into a senior technical role, influence design standards, champion best‑practice engineering, and contribute to the development of our Secondary Design capability across distribution, sub‑transmission, and transmission assets.

Key Responsibilities
- Deliver specialist engineering designs for terminal stations, industrial substations, and distributed generation connections.
- Review and improve design processes to lift productivity, efficiency, and quality.
- Review, monitor, and approve engineering solutions, proposals, and manufacturer drawings.
- Support the adoption of new technologies and innovative design practices.
- Contribute ideas that strengthen our design capability and competitive position.
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and guidance to the design team.
- Make informed decisions on complex issues, balancing technical, commercial, and safety considerations.
- Develop and implement technical policies, procedures, and design standards.
- Work closely with the Design Leadership team to build a collaborative and agile culture.
- Responsible for full detailed design package delivery.

Key Criteria
- Strong AutoCAD design capability and experience delivering complex engineering solutions.
- Deep knowledge of modern protection and control technologies, including IEC61850 and SCADA.
- Hands‑on experience performing fault current analysis using complex numbers and symmetrical components (Excel and software such as PowerFactory, PSSE, or Sincal).
- Strong understanding of regulatory requirements, Safety in Design, and relevant standards.
- Extensive experience in protection settings and design within the electrical utility sector.
- Expertise in specifying and configuring protection relays across major suppliers.
- Strong 5 years recent experience with detailed design of Terminal stations or Zone substations within AUS/NZ.
To be successful in this role, you will ideally possess:
- A Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) or equivalent qualification
- Registration as a Registered Professional Engineer of Victoria (RPEV) via Business Licensing Authority (BLA)
