About the role


We are seeking a skilled Design Engineer to join our team, focusing on projects across urban and metropolitan areas within the network. This role is responsible for delivering high-quality engineering expertise in the scoping, design, and cost estimation of distribution, sub-transmission, and station infrastructure. It also includes minor survey work and maintaining accurate asset records to ensure compliance and data integrity. The position supports the implementation of policies and engineering standards to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the network in line with business and regulatory requirements.

 

This position is ideally suited for a qualified professional who is already registered with the National Engineering Register (NER) and/or RPEng, or is actively working towards registration. Demonstrated experience in distribution design, particularly within urban or high-density environments, is essential. The successful candidate will bring a strong technical foundation and a collaborative approach to engineering delivery in a complex utility setting.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Provide effective engineering design and advice in relation to the design of underground lines, overhead lines and substations, to agreed standards, and in accordance with the relevant technical manuals, OH&S Act, ‘Safety in Design’ guidelines and customer requirements.
  • Assist with the development of design standards & policy in accordance with organisational, regulatory, and statutory requirements.
  • Provide effective design management to deliver projects of medium complexity within agreed time frames, quality and cost constraints
  • Prepare cost and resource estimates for the design component of electrical distribution/sub- transmission/station system projects in a timely manner and in accordance with Network Services established procedures.
  • Identify innovative or improvements which contributes to the benefit of the team
  • Consider the commercial/financial implications of all aspects in the provision of products and services to customers in order to maximise profit margins.
  • Monitor, review and reconcile time, costs and quality of network designs and ensure unproductive time is maintained at a minimum and all hours worked for are charged accordingly in a timely manner.
  • Provide technical expertise and mentoring to design personnel in elements of Design and Design management.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge relating to GIS, AutoCAD applications and/or other design and asset recording drafting systems to meet customer requirements.

 

 

Key Criteria

 

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical)
  • Eligible and working towards one of the following (or already registered): National Engineering Registration (NER) and Registered Professional Engineer of Professional Australia (RPEng)
  • Eligible and working towards being registered with the Business Licensing Authority (BLA)
  • Demonstrated experience in Distribution Design projects
  • Strong knowledge in using AutoCAD (or equivalent), GIS, electrical networks, operation, and construction plan
  • Understanding of Safety in Design practices
  • Experience using NEARA would be beneficial but is not a prerequisite.
