About the role


As a Secondary Design Engineer, you will be responsible for managing all secondary aspects of front-end and detailed engineering designs across major UE projects and ongoing programs of work. This includes the review and acceptance of designs and documentation to ensure they meet essential regulatory, industry, and safety standards.

 

Reporting to Design Manager, you will involve verifying that engineering outputs are fit for purpose, consistently aligning with UE-specific design requirements as well as relevant AS/NZS/IEC standards. The position demands meticulous attention to detail, strong technical judgment, and a commitment to upholding high engineering quality across every stage of the project lifecycle.

 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out Front End Engineering Design (FEED) / Concept Design, which typically includes control room general arrangement, protection single line diagrams, protection logic diagrams and protection signalling diagrams, so that the Technical Scope of Works for projects contains sufficient details to minimise contingency allowance by Service Providers and allows them to quote and respond with the same assumptions
  • Review Technical Scope of Works as provided by asset management team and develop it into a clear, comprehensive and accurate document containing all inputs, site surveys, preliminary studies and documentation requirements
  • Review all design/engineering deliverables including Design Management Plan provided by service providers
  • Perform audits of all design management processes used by service providers
  • Provide technical support for design, inspection, testing and commissioning works carried out by design/construction service providers and/or other stakeholders
  • Carry out detailed design of protection and control systems for complex or large zone substation or distribution system projects
  • Take ownership and coordinate/liaise with internal and external stakeholders to produce formal responses and reports
  • Support the completion of Post Implementation Reviews and analysis of relevant projects to ensure high productivity, efficiency and quality outcomes

Key Criteria

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical) and member of a National Engineering Register (or working towards)
  • At least 3+ years of relevant industry experience in the electrical utilities industry
  • Secondary system design experience in electricity zone substations and distribution network
  • Working knowledge of Distributed Network Protocol (DNP 3.0) used in SCADA communications
  • Application of engineering principles and industry codes, understanding the intricacies, complexities and the integration with other engineering areas
  • Detailed understanding of protection and control systems in electricity zone substations and distribution networks
